Minke Zijlstra was born on the 13th of September 1979 in Balkbrug. She was the first daughter of Fedde Zijlstra and Corry Zijlstra van Elburg. Minke has got an older brother Folmer and a younger sister Marije. After the primary school the CNS she went to secondary school the Meander College in Zwolle.
In 1997 she met her boyfriend Allard and went to teacher’s training college for French in Leeuwarden. After her graduation the couple went to live in Nijmegen. Minke worked at the Arentheem College in Arnhem. She taught French with great love.
Minke and Allard had a dream- to travel around the world. In August 2002 this dream came true. They left for a journey through middle and south America for 10 months. After a wonderful time Minke suddenly died on December 30th in Quepos, Costa Rica.
Minke loved children very much. She has left us an example of care and standing up for your fellow human being and justice wherever you are in the world. It is important to work at the well being and development of those who have so little chances in that part of the world where they were born.
To Minke especially the children needed to have more chances. She died far too young. We want to continue her example in the shape of a foundation that carries her name: the Minke Foundation (which in Dutch means something like 'Minke memory children’s education').
