In order to ensure the wishes of our donors are being respected, we stress the clarity of the designed and implemented projects and programs. We want to make sure we spend our money and excute our programs and projects in a sensible manner. Our donors and the people of the community we help are pre-eminently the ones to judge this.

Minke’s Bus Project
|
|
|
|
In June 2003, two co-workers of our sister organization Un Mundo, Adonis Lobo ( accountant) and Armando Reyes ( car mechanic) have travelled to San Pedro Sula to buy Minke’s Bus. The city of San Pedro Sula is situated in the north of Honduras and has the largest schoolbus market of the country. After having looked at and tested several busses, they have chosen a diesel-driven bus which is easy in maintenance. A few minor improvements where necessary, such as a new set of tires and a thorough overhaul of the engine. The costprice of the bus was 3198 Euros.
After the transfer of the schoolbus had taken place, Adonis and Armando could hed home. After a long drive of 6 hours they arrived in El Pital where the people were waiting in great expectation for Minke’s Bus. All inhabitants were very enthousiastic when they saw the bus coming.
These are the costs made to buy Minke’s Bus:
| Purchase Minke’s Bus: | 3198 Euro | | Transfer costs: | 18 Euro | | Repair costs to Minke’s Bus: | 30 Euro | | Gasoline: | 69 Euro | |
| Additional costs: | 63 Euro | | Total costs purchase Minke’s Bus: | 3378 Euro |

Minke’s Bus fund

The inhabitants of El Pital are represented by a society of parents of the students called ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’. The group of parents, consisting of several parents that have been democratically chosen, looks after the interest of the pupils and the students. Minke’s Bus has been transferred to the ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ via the Minke’s Bus contract:
1. In case the school ceases to exist or a schoolbus in no longer needed for any other reason, Minke’s Bus will be donated to another school in need of a schoolbus. 2. The ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ will have to be able to prove that they have at least $ 500,- on a banc account before Minke’s Bus will be transferred. This money is meant for the Minke’s Bus fund and will only be used to pay for repairs and the salary of the busdriver. *) 3. The ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ will have to present a fundraising plan to the MINKE Foundation. This plan should contain a list of activities the ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ will execute to raise money for the Minke’s Bus fund. In addition, the ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ will give full insight into the expenses that have been made to the MINKE Foundation and to each parent that wishes to.
*) The MINKE Foundation has financially assisted the ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ in the first phase of the Minke’s Bus fund by depositing part of the $500,-.
The transfer of Minke’s Bus to the ‘Sociedad de padres familia’ was an exiting and emotional happening. Some parents found it hard to accept the enormous responsibility of the control of Minke’s Bus. The reason for this is that they never had the responsibility for such a large project. However, the majority of the parents were willing to accept the challenge and convinced the other parents after a long discussion.
It may seem odd to you that some parents at first did not want to accept the Minke’s bus contract and with that did not wantto accept the responsibility for Minke’s Bus. However, we see this consultation as an important part of development aid. The consultation gives parents the possibility to take responsibility for their own lives and their own future. By dealing with issues of responsibility such as the singing of Minke’s Bus contract, this group of parents grows and learns to use their capacities individually as well as collectively. Another reason for transferring Minke’s Bus to the ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’ is to prevent any kind of abuse by government instituitions.
Since June, Minke’s Bus has been driving the children from and to school. The entire village by now is used to the bus cheerfully painted by the children. A report of the painting of Minke’s Bus can be seen and read under the button ‘Photogallery’
The following costs have been made by Minke’s Bus fund up till now:
| Notary costs registration ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’: | 141 Euro | | Registration Minke’s Bus ‘Sociedad de padres de familia’: | 68 Euro | | Costs maintenance, driver, gasoline June-Dec 2003: | 369 Euro | | Total costs Minke’s Bus fund: | 578 Euro |
The monthly costs for Minke’s Bus are approximately 200 USD.
Besides these expenses, Minke’s Bus is also used as a piggy bank incase of large unexpected expenses and the replacement of Minke’s Bus in the future. Each month 50 Euros is deposited in the Minke’s Bus fund to ensure a schoolbus to the children of El Pital on the long run.
